Barely two (2) weeks now that the Osun State High Court ruled that Muslim female students in both public primary and secondary schools in the state can now wear Hijab to school.

Justice Jide Falola who was the presiding judge noted that the Hijab is part of the fundamental rights of any Muslim’s female student.

This has without doubts bring about crisis in the primary and secondary school system of Osun state over this new development that allows the pupils to wear hijab to class and as a result, the Christian students in the state now wear their various churches attires to class.

The Christian Assiciation of Nigeria (CAN), through the CAN chairman, Elisha Ogundiya, last week issued a warning that if the Governor, Governor Rauf Aregbesola should go ahead in implementing the degree of the legalization of hijab by Muslim pupils, that the Christian students will also start wearing church garments to school. He stated that the decision was reached in an emergency sitting of its executives as well as the heads of all Churches in Osogbo.

The statement reads:
“Where the Osun State Government is inclined to implementing the judgment Christian students in all public schools founded by Christians with the toil and sweat of our forefathers in the faith will have no choice but to start wearing Christian garments and vestments as part of their school uniform for the propagation of our own faith given the Justice Saka Oyejide Falola declared right of Muslim Female Students to do same as what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander as well,”
Adherents of other faiths who have their choice to make in this matter can wear theirs as well.

This declaration violates the religious right of the original owners of the missionary schools as agreed upon when the schools were taken over by the then government of Oyo State in 1975.

This unshed toga of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola flies in the face of the fact of the overwhelming number of Christians in Osun State vis-a-vis Muslims”.
We are here to ensure that no student is send back home from school,” said Head of the Catholic Bloc of CAN in Iwo, Paul Olagoke.

We are here to defend the right of our children, since the female Muslim students are free to wear hijab, our own children also are free to wear anything.

Following this development, it was a dramatic situation today as Christian secondary students of Baptist High School, Adeeke in Iwo town of Osun State as well as Salvation Army Middle School, Alekuwodo, in the state were seen on their various church garments in school, in protest against the use of Hijab by the Muslim students.

Meanwhile, officials and members of the association - CAN, were fully present to make sure the students are not disturbed or sent back home.
